    1. Peace is a fundamental component of community development, personal growth, and survival of our planet. At the heart of every faith community, and culture.lies a need advance peaceful co-existence to enhance productive, meaningful lives sustainable societies. Peace underlies our quality of life and the fabric of our communities; and as our weaponry becomes ever more powerful, our very survival as people on this planet depends on it.
    1. The modern world is becoming highly fragmented, less peaceful and unsafe for both present and future generations. The world today is engulfed by an environment of tension, violence, declining values, injustices, reduced tolerance and respect for human rights, threatening the future of the youth who deserve a peaceful and better quality of life.

     e

    1. Today, the world faces different types of conflicts and the worst form is terrorism, which has resulted in catastrophic loss of property and human life, ultimately hindering peace between communities, nations and religions. The core issue driving these conflicts and extremist actions is intolerant thought processes, violent narratives, and society’s attitudes, which have provided an enabling environment for terrorism to spread rapidly. Violent extremism is an emerging challenge being witnessed in the society.
    1. Gaps in social, political, and engagement are grievances, which create opportunities for extremist groups to manipulate youth in to engaging in violent extremist activities. Violent extremists take advantage of increased unemployment, especially among youth  who are economically vulnerable, out of school, idle, and socially frustrated with out having any public platforms to express themselves. The violent extremist narratives come in the form of ideological messages which are carefully crafted to target young and impressionable minds, particularly those who are willing to join their ‘struggle’ -often misrepresented as ‘Jihad’ by the violent extremist groups. The youth end up getting radicalized in the process, and as a result , begin to harbor extreme and violent views. This has enabled the extremists to sale the rhetoric of a better life when one migrates to their turf. Conflict often severs young people’s ties with community, creating a sense of loss and lack of belonging. The increases the need for genuine interfaith dialogue, tolerance and harmony that will lead to a deeper understanding and relationship building with other faiths and beliefs.

Section Three : Reading Passage Two

                                     The Father of Vaccination

    1. In a small town in England,in the middle of the eighteenth century, an eight year-old boy named Edward Jenner was intentionally infected with deadly disease. He was then locked in a barn with other children who had been similarly infected. There they remained until they either died or recovered. Fortunately for humanity, Jenner survived. The doctors were doing variolation. A common practice in the eighteenth century, variolation involved deliberately infecting a healthy person with smallpox, a highly contagious disease that killed one in three (about 3%) infants and young children . it was believed that healthy people infected with the pus of patients sick with mild cases of smallpox would develop only a mild form of the disease. Those  individuals would then be protected from smallpox for the rest of their lives. Although variolation was the only effective means of fighting smallpox at the time, it was quite dangerous. About 10% of those variolated came down with a severe case of smallpox.
    1. Edward Jenner would never forget his terrible days in the barn. Perhaps that was what led him to choose medicine as a career. In 1761, at just 13, Jenner began his medical studies. By 1770, he was studying anatomy and surgery under John Hunter at St. George’s Hospital in London . After two years in London, Jenner returned to his hometown. He was a popular doctor due to his gentle personality and surgical skill. One common request was for variolation. Jenner performed the procedure many times although he used a less severe method than the one that he had suffered through as a child. Jenner observed that some of his variolated patients never developed even a mild case of smallpox. Because of his training in the scientific method, he wanted to understand why these particular individuals were able to resist the disease. He discovered that they had all previously had cowpox,a mild illness passed from cows to humans. Jenner observed that cowpox, while much less severe than smallpox, was in many ways similar to it. He was also aware of a traditional belief that people who had had cowpox never got smallpox.
    1.   Based on his observations, Jenner came up with a theory. He believed that cowpox not only protected against smallpox, but could be passed from one human being to another as a deliberate means of protection. In May 1776, Jenner finally got the chance to test his theory . He learned that a young woman from a local farm, Sara Nelmes, had cowpox. Junner asked the parents of an eight-year-old boy named James Phipps for permission to conduct a risky experiment on their son. Jenner chose Jemes because he had never had cowpox or smallpox. Jenner removed pus from Sarah’s hand and spread it on scratches he had made on the boy’s arms. As expected, the boy developed a mild case of cowpox, but recovered rapidly. Jenner was now ready for the second, much riskier stage of his experiment. On July 1, 1796, Jenner variolated Phipps with pus from a smallpox patient. Jenner and other scientists and physicians waited anxiously for the results. Some were excited about Jenner’s experiment, but many others accused him of taking too great a risk.
    1. In fact,James Phipps never developed smallpox. This was clear evidence to support Jenner’s theory, but more data were needed. Jenner experimented successfully on 13 other patients, and at the end of 1796 he wrote a report describing his work for the Royal Society. However ,it was turned down for publication. According to those who reviewed it, Jenner’s theory was too much of a challenge to the accepted medical beliefs of the time. Jenner ignored the criticism and continued experimenting. In 1798 he published his own book based on 23 cases in which vaccination (named for the vaccinnia: virus of cowpox) resulted in lasting protection against , or immunity to , smallpox. Although many people continued to criticize Jenner, some well -known London physicians were starting to vaccinate their patients. By the beginning of the nineteenth century, the practice of vaccination had spread throughout the world and in 1980, the World Health Assembly announced that “the world and its peoples” were free of smallpox.
